Routes in the surroundings
Small visit around the Nestore River:
Just 3 km from the Poggiolo, there are pleasant and easy walking and biking trails along the Nestore River up to the Castle of S. Apollinare, a refined Byzantine building dating back to the XI century.
From the hilltop of the village you can see a truly unique panorama over most of the Nestore Valley.
Walking time about 3 hours. Cycling 1 and a half hours.
Villages around Trasimeno Lake:
A 20-minute drive west from Poggiolo towards Castiglione del Lago leads you to a shorthistoric and naturalistic route.
After Castiglione you can visit the small villages of Pacianoand Panicale with its wonderful view onto the lake.
Going around hills and castles:
South of Poggiolo, on the way to Marsciano, the road offers magnificent landscapes of the hills with their castles and old villages. It’s possible to visit the castles of S.Apollinare, Monte Vibiano, Monte Lagello, S. Vito in Monte and the villages of Mercatello and Migliano.
The Esoteric city:
Following a route that is a bit tortuous but quite picturesque in the direction of Pietrafitta and Castiglion Fosco, very close to Montegiove you can visit an old Franciscan monastery – “La Scarzuola” – where the architect Tommaso Buzzi from Milano built his ideal city, a bizarre, esoteric dream that is worth a visit!
